Klassik Stiftung Weimar
A European cultural hub
With over 30 museums, castles, historic residences, the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek, a research library with holdings totalling one million volumes, the Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv, along with numerous parks in and around Weimar, the Klassik Stiftung Weimar is an important centre of European historical, cultural and academic heritage.
Its collection holdings include works from the Middle Ages to modernity with specialisation in the areas of “Classical Weimar” and “Modernism in Weimar”. More than 100 estates from some of Germany’s most famous writers and artists are preserved at the Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv, the country’s oldest literary archive, including Goethe’s literary estate which UNESCO added to the “Memory of the World” register in 2001.
The importance of the foundation is underscored by the UNESCO’s addition of eleven properties in the “Classical Weimar” ensemble to the register of World Heritage Sites.
