Bach-Archiv Leipzig

Lively centre of Bach research

The Bach-Archiv Leipzig collects, preserves, catalogues and studies the musical, documentary and literary materials by and about Johann Sebastian Bach, his extensive family of musicians and their circle of acquaintances. As a research institute, museum and library, the Bach-Archiv promotes academic research and organises educational activities for the public. Every year in June, it hosts the prestigious Bachfest in Leipzig.

The biannual Bach Competition is one of the most important international music competitions for young performers. In view of its diverse range of functions, the Bach-Archiv is unlike any institution in the world. After extensive renovation, the Bach Museum reopened in 2010 on the occasion of J. S. Bach’s 325th anniversary. The permanent exhibition featuring multimedia and interactive elements introduces visitors to the life and works of this famous composer and his family.
