UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Cultural heritage of humanity
In 1972 UNESCO adopted the World Heritage Convention. Its goal was to preserve and safeguard cultural and natural assets which possess “extraordinary universal value”. Since then, the list has grown to 890 cultural and natural world heritage sites, 33 of which are located in Germany. There are seven World Heritage Sites among the listed “cultural beacons” of the KNK:
- Palaces and parks of Potsdam and Berlin (since 1990)
- The Bauhaus and its sites in Dessau and Weimar (since 1996)
- Luther memorial sites, Wittenberg and Eisleben (since 1996)
- Classical Weimar (since 1998)
- Wartburg Eisenach (since 1999)
- Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz (since 2000)
- Muskau Park (since 2004)
